Description
Clara Brett Martin was the first female lawyer in Canada and in the British Empire and is remembered as an important figure in women's history.
When Martin applied to the Law Society in Toronto in 1881, she was first rejected on the grounds of her being a woman. She eventual succeeded and practiced law at her own firm on Bay Street.
