Description
The Lily Cups office building and factory was a landmark on this site for over 60 years. Built in 1949, the complex consisted of a state-of-the-art factory, and offices that were defined by a huge concrete Lily Cup at the entrance, extending from the ground to above the roofline.
The factory produced cups and other paper products for retail and wholesale consumers. In the 1980s, a series of strikes led to a decline in sales, as labour councils called for a boycott of Lily Cup products. Free trade policies further affected Lily Cup and other companies in the manufacturing sector.
In 1988, following the resolution of a labour dispute, Lily Cup consolidated operations at its more modern Markham Road facility and sold this site. The buildings here were demolished in 2010.
