Description
Joseph Bouchette's 1815 map shows the importance of the lake to the founders of the Town of York. Born in Montreal, Bouchette was only 18 when he first studied the Toronto area while serving as a Provincial Marine in the military force tasked with protecting various waterways. Governor Simcoe requested this early surveying work to plan the major naval base he wished to have built in the harbour (an idea that did not become a reality). Bouchette would later serve as Surveyor General for Lower Canada, a lieutenant-colonel of the Lower Canadian militia, and was involved in prominent projects including finalizing the border between New Brunswick and Maine.
