Research Summary for Western Cattle Market, 2018.
Description
The Western Cattle Market was established in 1877 to replace livestock sales at St. Law-rence Market downtown. Located near the Grand Trunk Railway, the Market attracted meat-packing and slaughter facilities, staying true to Toronto’s nickname, “Hogtown.” Af-ter the Junction stockyards opened in 1903, the Western Cattle Market struggled to com-pete; it was sold in 1960 to Quality Meat Packers Ltd., and closed in 2014.
