Description
Before the Canadian National Exhibition began in 1879, an annual provincial fair rotated host cities around Ontario. For the 1858 fair, the Palace of Industry was erected north of here on land south of the Provincial Lunatic Asylum. Also known as the Crystal Palace, it was Toronto’s first permanent exhibition hall. Relocated to present-day Exhibition Place in 1878, the hall was later destroyed by fire. Part of the property near here was incorporated into the Asylum’s farm garden, where patients grew produce.
